LegCo congratulates newly elected President and Chairman of CMC of PRC at first session of 14th NPC
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The third plenary meeting of the first session of the 14th National People's Congress was held today (March 10). The Legislative Council (LegCo) extended its most sincere congratulations to President Xi Jinping on his unanimous election as the President of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Chairman of the Central Military Commission of PRC.

The President of the LegCo, Mr Andrew Leung, pointed out that, under the leadership of the Central Government with President Xi at its core, our country has made world-renowned achievements since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). It is clear to all that the people's living standard has been improving.

Mr Leung said that President Xi had repeatedly expressed his care for all sectors and the people of Hong Kong in recent years. In his keynote speech delivered on 1 July last year in Hong Kong and in the report to the 20th National Congress of CPC, President Xi stressed that the policy of "one country, two systems" was the best institutional arrangement for ensuring sustained prosperity and stability in the Special Administrative Region (SAR). President Xi also stressed that this policy must be persistently adhered to. As the legislature of the SAR and under the executive-led system, the LegCo will complement and monitor the SAR Government in exercising law-based governance. The LegCo will also contribute to the Government's efforts in enhancing its overall governance and management capacity, with a view to the continual improvement of the policy of "one country, two systems".
