The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) today (March 1) mounted a joint operation with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and a relevant government department to combat the illegal use of hunting appliances in a hillside area near Po Lam Estate, Tseung Kwan O. Some hunting appliances were seized and an animal was rescued in the operation.

During the operation, a total of 11 cage traps were found and removed immediately. In addition, a leopard cat ensnared in a trap was rescued and sent to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden for a medical checkup and treatment. The AFCD is following up the case.

An AFCD spokesman said, "The AFCD is determined to combat illegal hunting of wild animals. AFCD staff conduct frequent patrols in countryside areas and take resolute enforcement action against violations."

The spokesman noted that under the Wild Animals Protection Ordinance (Cap. 170), no person shall, except in accordance with a special permit, hunt or willfully disturb, sell or export, possess or control any protected wild animals. Offenders are liable upon conviction to a maximum fine of $100,000 and imprisonment for one year.
