Transport Department launches trial scheme on smart zebra crossing (with photo)
***************************************************************

The Transport Department (TD) said today (March 1) a trial scheme on smart zebra crossing at the zebra crossing near ELCHK Kwai Shing Lutheran Primary School on Kwai Luen Road, Kwai Tsing was launched. Through detecting vehicles approaching the zebra crossing and pedestrians waiting to cross the road by thermal detectors installed on the Belisha beacons, the brightness and flashing frequency of the beacons and illuminated posts will be adjusted to further alert motorists to stop and give way to pedestrians. The system can also send out bluetooth signals to alert visually impaired persons of the presence of the zebra crossing.

The system does not have any recording function, and is not for monitoring the behaviour of pedestrians and motorists, and the thermal detectors also does not possess any face or vehicle registration marks recognition functions.

The scheme will last for 12 months. Upon completion of the trial, the TD will review its effectiveness and consider the way forward.

Motorists are reminded to observe road safety and look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down when approaching a zebra crossing. They must stop and give way to pedestrians who have stepped onto the zebra crossing.
