Vibrant hydrangeas to boost colour in Victoria Park from March 10 (with photos)
*******************************************************************************
This year's Hong Kong Flower Show will be held in Victoria Park starting March 10, with the gorgeous and uniquely grown hydrangea as the theme flower. The hydrangea is renowned for its glamorous large flowers and splendid colours in full bloom, which bring a special vibrancy to spring.

The flower show will last for 10 days from March 10 to 19, running from 9am to 9pm daily. With "Bliss in Bloom" as the theme of the show, the exquisite blossoms of the hydrangea and the four specially decorated displays themed along the four seasons will create a captivating sense of bliss and romance in every corner of the showground. There will also be a light and music show running daily at 7.30pm and 8.30pm respectively during the show period at the floral displays, creating a different amazing scenery for audiences.

Native to China and Japan, hydrangeas, also known as hortensia, French hydrangea or ajisai in Japanese, are a deciduous shrub of the hydrangea family consisting of dozens of species. A cluster of brightly coloured and beautiful hydrangeas consists of innumerable florets densely packed to coalesce into a spherical mass, resembling wedding bouquets in the hands of brides, creating an auspiciously happy ambience. The most conspicuous parts of hydrangeas are the sepals, with small flowers growing in the centre. Looking big and glowing with charm, hydrangeas are deeply adored by flower fans across the globe, extensively planted in gardens, floral displays and pots.

Hydrangreas have notable features with the change of the pH value of the soil; the flower colours change according to that value. Flowers turn bluish in the case of acidic soils, and pinkish if grown in alkaline soils. Common colours of hydrangeas include purple, blue, pink, purple-red, white and green. Depending on the species, most bloom between spring and summer.

In addition to this year's theme flower hydrangea and other flowering plants, the event will showcase a rich profusion of exquisite potted plants, beautiful floral arrangements and gorgeous landscape displays by local, Mainland and overseas organisations. Commercial stalls will sell flowers and horticultural products, and a rich diversity of educational and recreational fringe activities will be organised for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages.

The flower show is organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is supporting the flower show for the 11th consecutive year and has been the major sponsor of the flower show since 2014.
