Three men sentenced for violating Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation

     Three men were sentenced by the Magistrates' Courts today (February 9) for violating the Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation (Cap. 599A).

     The first two cases involved two men aged 38 and 30. They earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and were issued with isolation orders. Before the end of the isolation period, the 38-year-old man left the place of isolation on July 26 last year, while the 30-year-old man left the place of isolation on November 14 and 16 last year. The 38 year-old man was charged with contravening sections 32(1) and (3) of the Regulation and was fined $5,000 by the Fanling Magistrates' Courts today. The 30-year-old man was charged with two counts of contravening sections 23(1), (3) and (5) of the Regulation and was fined a total of $13,000 by the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts today.

     The third case involved a 24-year-old man, who earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and was issued with an isolation order. Before the end of the isolation period, he left the place of isolation on October 8 last year and removed his electronic wristband. He was charged with one count of contravening sections 23(1), (3) and (5), and one count of contravening sections 23(1), (4) and (5) of the Regulation. He was fined a total of $5,000 by the Fanling Magistrates' Courts today.

     ​A spokesman for the Department of Health said that co-operation of and support by members of the public play a critical role in anti-epidemic work. They must strictly observe relevant requirements in order to fight the pandemic and minimise the risk of transmission in the community. The spokesman reiterated that resolute action will be taken against anyone who breaches the relevant regulations.
