Four persons sentenced for violating anti-epidemic regulations
**************************************************************
Four persons were sentenced by the Magistrates' Courts today (January 17) for violating the Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation (Cap. 599A), the Compulsory Quarantine of Certain Persons Arriving at Hong Kong Regulation (Cap. 599C) and the Prevention and Control of Disease (Disclosure of Information) Regulation (Cap. 599D).

The first case involved a 21-year-old woman who earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and was issued with an isolation order. Before the end of the isolation period, she left the place of isolation twice on October 18 last year. She was charged with two counts of contravening sections 32(1) and (3) of Cap. 599A and was sentenced to imprisonment for 14 days, suspended for 12 months for each of the offences, with the sentences to run concurrently by the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today.

The other two cases involved a 33-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, who were earlier issued with compulsory quarantine orders. Before the expiry of the quarantine orders, they left the place of quarantine on June 25 last year and October 29, 2021, respectively. The man was charged with contravening sections 32(1) and (3) of Cap. 599A and was fined $5,000 by the Tuen Mun Magistrates' Courts today. The woman was charged with contravening sections 8(1) and (5) of Cap. 599C and was sentenced to imprisonment for 14 days, suspended for 12 months by the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today.

The fourth case involved a 40-year-old man who earlier tested positive for COVID-19. During the epidemiological investigation by the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health, the man provided false information to an authorised officer on December 8, 2021. He was charged with contravening sections 3(1A), (4) and (5) of Cap. 599D and was bound over for 12 months with a recognisance of $2,000 by the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said that co-operation and support by members of the public play a critical role in the anti-epidemic work. They must strictly observe relevant requirements in order to fight the pandemic and minimise the risk of transmission in the community. The spokesman reiterated that resolute actions will be taken against anyone who breaches the relevant regulations.
