Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     As at yesterday (January 16), a total of 3 845 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 were hospitalised for treatment. Among the hospitalised confirmed patients, 258 were new patients, 1 962 required isolation, 598 required oxygen therapy and 61 required ventilator support. There were 16 newly reported critical patients and 18 newly reported serious patients. There were a total of 178 patients in critical condition and 167 serious condition, of which 41 critical patients were receiving intensive care. Moreover, there were 377 patients who had recovered, including 284 patients who had been discharged. In addition, 43 patients who passed away in public hospitals were reported. According to preliminary analysis, the cause of death of 15 patients was related to COVID-19, while that of the remaining 28 patients was not.
 
     The overall occupancy of medical beds in acute hospitals is around 110 per cent.
 
     In addition, nine female patients in a medical rehabilitation & convalescent ward of Yan Chai Hospital tested positive for COVID-19 with symptoms since January 9. All patients are being treated in isolation and are in stable condition. Thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted in the areas concerned, while infection control measures have been enhanced.
 
     The HA will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.
