LCSD launches free online programme "Jazz ABC"

     The first episode of the new Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)'s free online programme "Jazz ABC" is now available at the department's Edutainment Channel. The programme is hosted by jazz guitarist Mark Leung, who explains the basic concepts, knowledge and development of jazz music, with music demonstrations, in a simple and easily comprehensible way.
 
     The eight-episode online programme covers topics such as common jazz forms, rhythms and terms, and features four different genres and styles of jazz music. Leung, together with musicians Moon Wong (guitar), Barry Lam (bass guitar) and Felix Leung (drums), will also demonstrate the basic elements of a jazz ensemble.
 
     The content of each episode is outlined below:
 
Episode 1: Common Forms of Jazz Music (available online)
- To introduce the common jazz forms, and demonstrate the finer details of the process of playing in a jazz band.
 
Episode 2: Common Rhythms and Styles of Jazz Music
- To explain and demonstrate four common jazz music rhythms, including "swing", "bossa nova", "jazz ballad" and "jazz waltz", and the characteristics of each style.
 
Episodes 3 and 4: Jazz Vocabularies
- To introduce commonly used jazz terminology, including "walking bass", "licks", "comping", "bridge", "double time", "rubato", "broken time" and "jam session", with demonstrations.
 
Episode 5: Dixieland
- To explain and demonstrate the musical characteristics of Dixieland, a jazz style that originated in New Orleans, the United States.
 
Episode 6: Swing
- To introduce and demonstrate the musical characteristics of swing, which was all the rage between the 1920s and 1940s.
 
Episode 7: Bebop
- To demonstrate the musical characteristics of bebop and give audiences a glimpse of its improvised and unique beauty.
 
Episode 8: Hard Bop
- Playing a selection of hard bop tunes to explain the variety and improvisatory approach of this style of jazz.
 
     Leung is the founder of the Freelance Musician Association and a member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong. He has hosted various lecture demonstrations on jazz music including "Getting to Know Jazz", "Is Jazz That Hard?", "First Experience of Jazz" and "All that Jazz, Through the Years". Leung was an instructor of the Introduction to Popular Music course under the Associate Degree programme at the Hong Kong Institute of Technology.
 
     The free online programme "Jazz ABC" is conducted in Cantonese, and each episode runs for approximately 10 minutes.
