2023 Rural Ordinary Election completed

     The 2023 Rural Ordinary Election (ROE), covering Village Representative (including Indigenous Inhabitant Representative and Resident Representative) (VR) Election and Kaifong Representative (KFR) Election, held over two consecutive Sundays, concluded successfully yesterday (January 15) with an overall turnout of 54.46%.

     Rounding up the VR Election held on January 8, a total of 556 candidates from 182 villages contested 286 VR seats, including 185 Indigenous Inhabitants Representatives (IIRs) and 101 Resident Representatives (ReRs). The overall turnout rate was 56.40%, of which the respective turnouts for the IIR and the ReR Elections were 53.80% and 60.96%, with 33 055 voters casting their votes.

     For the KFR Election held yesterday, 67 candidates contested 39 Cheung Chau KFR seats. The overall turnout rate was 37.77%, with 2 567 voters casting their votes.

     There were 1 540 seats for the 2023 ROE, with 1 100 candidates returned uncontested and 115 seats left vacant with no nomination. This year, there were a total of 191 088 and 8 990 eligible registered electors in the VR Election and KFR Election respectively.
 
     The tenure of office for the new term of VRs and KFRs will run from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2027.
