Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     ​As at yesterday (December 28), a total of 5 195 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 were hospitalised for treatment. Among the hospitalised confirmed patients, 616 were new patients, 3 213 required isolation, 727 required oxygen therapy and 88 required ventilator support. There were 28 newly reported critical patients and 23 newly reported serious patients. There were a total of 199 patients in critical condition and 170 in serious condition, of which 50 critical patients were receiving intensive care. Moreover, there were 558 patients who had recovered, including 454 patients who had been discharged. In addition, 62 patients who passed away in public hospitals were reported.

     The Hospital Authority (HA) has reviewed the preliminary statistics of the past week (December 21 to December 27). Among the COVID-19 patients admitted through accident and emergency departments, around 73 per cent were admitted due to COVID-19 infection, while around 27 per cent were admitted due to other medical reasons. For the deceased COVID-19 patients, around 52 per cent potentially died of COVID-19, while around 48 per cent died from other illnesses. The HA will keep analysing the statistics concerned so as to provide appropriate services in accordance with the situation and patient needs.

     The overall occupancy of medical beds in acute hospitals is around 119 per cent.

     The HA will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.
