Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases
***********************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

As at yesterday (December 18), a total of 4 105 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 are hospitalised for treatment. Among the hospitalised confirmed patients, 504 were new patients, 2 850 required isolation, 479 required oxygen therapy and 57 required ventilator support. There were 18 newly reported critical patients and 28 newly reported serious patients. There were a total of 127 patients in critical condition and 136 in serious condition, of which 41 critical patients are receiving intensive care. Moreover, there were 280 patients who have recovered, including 227 patients who have been discharged. In addition, 39 patients who passed away in public hospitals were reported.

The overall occupancy of medical beds in acute hospitals is around 111 per cent.

In the past week, there were 653 COVID-19 patients who reside in residential care homes for the elderly (RCHEs) admitted to hospitals. The number is continuously higher than the 553 and 358 RCHE COVID-19 patients admitted in the past two weeks respectively. The Hospital Authority (HA) is very concerned and will closely monitor the situation. The HA will keep close communication with relevant government departments and RCHEs so as to enhance medical support to RCHEs through the outreach teams.

In addition, 17 patients in a male ward for intellectual disability of the Castle Peak Hospital tested positive for COVID-19 with symptoms since December 15. All patients are being treated under isolation. One patient is in serious condition while the others are in stable condition. Admission and visiting arrangements for the ward concerned have been suspended. Thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted in the areas concerned, while infection control measures have been enhanced.

The HA will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.
