**************************************************************
The Mui Wo Mountain Bike Practice Ground, designed and built by the Sustainable Lantau Office (SLO) of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), officially opened today (December 17).

Located in Lantau South Country Park with an area of about 4.5 hectares, the Mui Wo Mountain Bike Practice Ground is the first mountain bike practice ground in Hong Kong and also one of the largest practice grounds in Asia. Together with its associated trails, it is the only venue in Hong Kong that covers all five mountain bike difficulty levels.

The CEDD and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) held the Mui Wo Mountain Bike Practice Ground Opening Ceremony today, with the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Michael Fong; the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Dr Leung Siu-fai; Vice-chairman of the Mui Wo Rural Committee Mr Li Kwok-keung; the Chairman of the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China, Mr Leung Hung-tak; the Director of the Hong Kong Mountain Bike Association, Mr Shaun Horrocks; and the former champion of men's cross country mountain bike cycling of the Asian Games Chan Chun-hing, as officiating guests.

Mr Fong said that the expansion of the mountain bike trail networks in south Lantau is one of the sustainable key leisure and recreation initiatives implemented by the SLO. Sustainable principles have been adopted in the design and construction of the practice ground with a view to retaining the original landscape of the country park as far as possible and reducing the need for future maintenance. Experts' advice has also been sought to safeguard the safety of users. Mr Fong said he hoped that the public would make good use of the practice ground and enjoy mountain biking.

Dr Leung said that the practice ground will be managed by the AFCD. The AFCD has been committed to improving the mountain bike trails in country parks over the years. The bike network and facilities had also been continuously improved and maintained with a view to enhancing the users' experience. He appealed to mountain bikers to take the training facilities and trails that suit their skill, experience and interest, and ride safely in accordance with instructions to care for themselves and others.
