Three persons sentenced for violating Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation

     Three persons were sentenced by the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (December 13) for violating the Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation (Cap. 599A).

     The first two cases involved a 30-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man respectively. They had earlier tested positive for COVID-19 and been issued with isolation orders. Before the end of the isolation period, they left the place of isolation and removed their electronic wristbands on August 2 and September 24 respectively. The woman was charged with one count of contravening sections 23(1), (3) and (5) and one count of contravening sections 23(1), (4) and (5) of the Regulation, while the man was charged with one count of contravening sections 32(1) and (3) and one count of contravening sections 23(1), (4) and (5) of the Regulation. They were respectively sentenced by Eastern Magistrates' Courts today to imprisonment for two weeks, suspended for 12 months for each of the two charges, with the sentences to run concurrently.

     The third case involved a 43-year-old man, who had earlier been issued with a compulsory quarantine order. Before the expiry of the quarantine order, he left the place of quarantine on May 14. He was charged with contravening sections 22(1), (4) and (6) of the Regulation. He was sentenced by Eastern Magistrates' Courts today to imprisonment for two weeks, suspended for 12 months.

     ​A spokesman for the Department of Health said that co-operation of and support by members of the public play a critical role in the anti-epidemic work. They must strictly observe relevant requirements in order to fight the pandemic and minimise the risk of transmission in the community. The spokesman reiterated that resolute action will be taken against anyone who breaches the relevant regulations.
