Cantonese Opera Development Fund launches Scholarship Scheme and Self-development Subsidy Scheme
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund:

The Cantonese Opera Development Fund announced today (December 12) the launch of the Scholarship Scheme and the Self-development Subsidy Scheme, to support the continuing development of local Cantonese opera practitioners, and to enhance their artistic accomplishments and professional standards, with a view to nurturing more outstanding Cantonese opera talents.

The Chairman of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund Advisory Committee, Professor Lui Yu-hon, said, "The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government set up the Fund in 2005 to support projects and activities related to the preservation, promotion and development of Cantonese opera. To strengthen the support for Cantonese opera training, the Fund has set up two new funding schemes. The Scholarship Scheme aims to support promising local Cantonese opera performers in the sector to study formal professional training courses in Hong Kong, the Mainland or overseas. Courses of study are not only limited to Cantonese opera, but also include learning of other Chinese operas and forms of performing arts, as well as performance-related positions. In addition, the Fund has also piloted the Self-development Subsidy Scheme to encourage local Cantonese opera practitioners (including on-stage and back-stage staff) to further their studies in courses related to Cantonese opera and other forms of performing arts, so as to facilitate the development of the local Cantonese opera sector."

The assessment criteria for the above two funding schemes include: the compliance of the applications with the aims of the schemes; the potential, qualifications and experience/artistic level of the applicants in the Cantonese opera sector; the benefit of the studies to the promotion of the development of Cantonese opera; and the suitability and feasibility of the studies.

The application guides and application forms of the two funding schemes can be downloaded from the Fund's website (www.coac-codf.org.hk). The closing date of application is February 8, 2023.

The Fund will hold a briefing session on December 29, to introduce the application procedures as well as the content of the two new funding schemes to the Cantonese opera sector. Details and enrolment for the briefing session are available at the Fund's website. For enquiries, please contact the Secretariat of the Fund at 3655 5627.
