******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Council for Sustainable Development:

The opening ceremony of the Low Carbon Living Scheme, funded by the Council for Sustainable Development (SDC) and organised by the New Home Association, was held today (December 10) at the Yau Tsim Mong Multicultural Activity Centre. It is one of the projects approved for funding under the 14th round of application for the Sustainable Development Fund (SDF), and one of the celebration events for the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The project offers a wide range of activities for ethnic minorities, new arrivals and local families, through which young people will be trained as ambassadors. By taking part in training workshops, community exploration tours and public participation activities, participants can enhance their understanding of low-carbon living, and promote the message of low-carbon living by means of their networks at individual, community and organisational levels.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairperson of the Education and Publicity Sub-committee of the SDC, Ms Chan Shin-kwan, said that Hong Kong strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. On the path to carbon neutrality, decarbonisation cannot be achieved by the Government alone. Public participation is also needed to combat climate change. The projects funded by the SDF will effectively promote the practice of decarbonisation in the community.

Other officiating guests of the ceremony included the Chairman of the Legislative Council Panel on Environmental Affairs, Ms Elizabeth Quat; the Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Ho Kai-ming; the District Officer (Yau Tsim Mong), Mr Edward Yu; and the Head of Service (HK) of the New Home Association, Mr Chan Yee-fei.

The ceremony introduced activities of the project, and had representatives from GREEN@JORDAN introduce recycling services, demonstrate proper ways of source separation of waste and clean recycling, and offer tips on waste reduction and low-carbon living. There were also singing and dancing performances by ethnic minorities youths, and workshops and game booths on decarbonisation and sustainable development, with a view to enhancing the public's interest in and awareness of low-carbon living.
