Speech by SCST at appointment ceremony of Ambassador for Cultural Promotion and sharing session
******************************************************************************************
Good afternoon Dr Tan (Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music in New York and honorary artistic director of the China National Symphony Orchestra, Dr Tan Dun), ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to announce that the Government has appointed Dr Tan Dun, a world-renowned Chinese composer, artist and conductor, as Ambassador for Cultural Promotion carrying the mission of bringing Hong Kong to a higher level among the international arts community.
The appointment of Dr Tan will strengthen Hong Kong's role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange as set out in the National 14th Five-Year Plan. With this appointment, Dr Tan will facilitate cultural exchange by providing more opportunities for Hong Kong artists to participate in large scale performing arts projects so as to broaden their horizon and, at the same time, demonstrate Hong Kong's cultural soft power to the world.
The Government also attaches great importance in nurturing young talents. With Dr Tan's experience in working with young people as the Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music in New York, he will help our young people develop a global vision. I look forward to joining hands with him in telling the good stories of Hong Kong in the future. The Government will also continue to invite arts and cultural leaders to take up the role of ambassador to fulfil Hong Kong's important role as a hub for international cultural exchange.
Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank Dr Tan in accepting the appointment and wish him a great success in future collaborations.
