The Education Commission today (December 8) held the Shaping the Education for Future Seminar to explore the role of education in fostering students' well-being in the digital age with an aim of starting a new chapter for Hong Kong's education in the global arena. A signature event of the Education Week, the seminar attracted about 200 participants from the education sector.

In delivering his welcome remarks, the Chairman of the Education Commission, Mr Tim Lui, said that the seminar aimed to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Hong Kong's education and look ahead at the future of education. He pointed out that, in view of the rapid development of technology, change in the learning mode and the need for future development of society, the community should pay attention to the well-being of students and equip them to meet various challenges and seize the opportunities brought about by national development.

Also officiating at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Education, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, thanked the Education Commission for offering a multi-disciplinary perspective and wise counsel on education objectives and policies over the years, which has contributed to continuous improvements in education services. She said that the Education Bureau has promulgated multi-dimensional initiatives to cater for the needs of students at different learning stages. With the goal of cultivating values, the bureau will continue to nurture talent with an affection for the country, deepen national education, step up promotion of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) education, groom professionals for industries with a keen demand for manpower, and strengthen teacher training in order to provide strong manpower support for the development of Hong Kong and the modernisation of the country.

The seminar brought together a host of academics and experts from the education and innovation and technology professions. They presented keynote speeches and exchanged views with participants on topics covering students' well-being; building resilience; promoting whole-person development with education technology; and skills and competencies required in the future.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, a video was premiered at the seminar to showcase the fruitful achievements and distinctive advantages of Hong Kong's education in the past 25 years and the integration of Hong Kong's education into national development. Details of the seminar are available on the dedicated website (www.e-c.edu.hk/ecseminar), where highlights of the event will be uploaded soon.

The Education Week commenced on December 7. Apart from the Shaping the Education for Future Seminar organised by the Education Commission, the campaign also features the Learning and Teaching Expo and the Future Skills Community Event.
