The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) announced a suspected incident of a staff member and patient being assaulted today (December 2).
A 92-year-old male patient was admitted to AHNH isolation ward due to COVID-19 infection and presented with confusion requiring the application of physical restraint. On the evening of November 16, the patient loosened the physical restraint and left the isolation cubicle. A ward staff member advised and arranged for the patient to return to the cubicle and applied physical restraint on him again. During the process, both the ward staff member and the patient were suspected of being assaulted.
The ward staff member subsequently reported the incident to the ward manager. The hospital is highly concerned about the incident and has commenced an investigation and has reported the incident to the Police. The hospital will co-operate with the Police on the investigation. The staff member concerned is currently on leave.
The incident has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office via the Advance Incident Reporting System. The hospital has explained the incident to the patient's relatives, and will continue to communicate with the relatives so as to provide necessary assistance.
AHNH attaches great importance to patient safety, and always requires its staff to uphold professional ethics stringently. If any inappropriate conduct is found, the hospital will follow up seriously.
