The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:
The President of the Legislative Council (LegCo), Mr Andrew Leung, today (November 30) on behalf of all LegCo Members expressed deep condolences on the death of Former President Jiang Zemin.
Mr Leung commended Former President Jiang as an outstanding leader, who had put people's interest first, led the country to modernization, promoted economic development and raised the living standard of the people.
Mr Leung said Former President Jiang had made enormous contribution to Hong Kong's smooth reunification with the Motherland. On 1 July 1997, he led the Central Government delegation to witness the historic moment of Hong Kong's return to the Motherland. This symbolized a new era of the country and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), fostering a closer relationship and better mutual understanding ever since.
Mr Leung also said Hong Kong was always close to the heart of Former President Jiang. He visited Hong Kong a number of times and reached out to various sectors of the community to understand its development and public sentiment. Former President Jiang also repeatedly offered his public support for the law-based administration of the then HKSAR Government to uphold "one country, two systems" in strict accordance with the Basic Law, ensuring the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong since its return to the Motherland.
