Seminar on promoting collaboration in overseas Economic and Trade Co-operation Zones held today (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (CEDB) and the Commercial Office of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government (LOCPG) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) today (November 30) jointly organised a seminar on overseas Economic and Trade Co-operation Zones (ETCZs), with over 350 sign-ups from enterprises and different sectors.

The seminar, held in an online/offline hybrid format, aimed to raise Hong Kong enterprises' understanding of the latest developments of Mainland China's ETCZs in Vietnam, Indonesia and Laos, as well as the trade and investment policies and business environment there, and encourage them to develop and expand their businesses by capitalising on the ETCZs.

The seminar focused on three ETCZs located in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, namely the Long Jiang Industrial Park in Vietnam, the PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park in Indonesia and the Vientiane Saysettha Development Zone in Laos. The Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Department and Head of the Commercial Office of the LOCPG in the HKSAR, Mr Liu Yajun; the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce, Mr Li Hongwei; and the Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Dr Bernard Chan, spoke at the venue and online respectively.

Dr Chan said that in taking forward the Belt and Road Initiative, the HKSAR Government has been working towards promoting Hong Kong as a functional platform, and facilitating connections between local businesses and professional services sectors with enterprises in the Mainland and around the globe, including ETCZs established by the Mainland, with a view to proactively fostering collaboration amongst Mainland, overseas and Hong Kong businesses and professional services sectors to explore new opportunities.

With trade and investment relations between Hong Kong and ASEAN being further strengthened after the Free Trade Agreement and the Investment Agreement between Hong Kong and ASEAN came into full effect in early 2021, Dr Chan said that the Mainland's ETCZs were ideal entry points for Hong Kong enterprises' investment in or opening up of overseas markets and developing production bases.

He added that the Chief Executive had announced in the Policy Address the establishment of the Steering Group on Integration into National Development to proactively promote high-quality development of co‑operation between Hong Kong and the Belt and Road countries in trade and commerce, professional services and cultural exchanges. The CEDB will render full support and continue to establish and make use of exchange and collaboration platforms to enhance international connectivity and open up markets for Hong Kong.

The Minister Counsellor of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Mr Hu Suojin; the Counsellor of Economy and Commerce of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Indonesia, Mr Wu Zhiwei; and the Counsellor of Economy and Commerce of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Lao People's Democratic Republic, Mr Zhao Wenyu, introduced the investment and business environment as well as the industrial development situation of the three places at the seminar. In addition, the management of the three ETCZs briefed participants on the latest developments, investment policies and financing requirements of the zones. The speakers also interacted with the participants.
