EPD awards West Kowloon Transfer Station Second Follow-On Contract and Island West and Island East Transfer Stations Second Follow-On Contract
******************************************************************************************
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (November 21) announced that, following an open tender process, China Harbour Engineering Company Limited has won the West Kowloon Transfer Station Second Follow-On Contract and the Island West and Island East Transfer Stations Second Follow-On Contract.

"The West Kowloon Transfer Station (WKTS), Island West Transfer Station (IWTS) and Island East Transfer Station (IETS) were completed in the 1990s and have been in operation for over 20 years. Most of the facilities in these refuse transfer stations (RTS) have been ageing. We need to implement refurbishment and upgrading works to maintain reliable and safe waste transfer services and enhance the operational efficiency and environmental performance of the RTS. The EPD plans to start the works after the expiry of the existing operation contracts. During the works period, the daily waste transfer services at the RTS will be maintained," an EPD spokesperson said.

The WKTS is located on Stonecutters Island, while the IWTS and IETS are located at the waterfront of Kennedy Town and at Sun Yip Street in Chai Wan respectively. Every day, the waste delivered to the RTS is immediately compacted and containerised in purpose-built sealed containers for onward sea transportation by purpose-built container vessels to the West New Territories Landfill for disposal.

Upon completion of the improvement works, the three RTS will have their waste handling efficiency comprehensively improved and environmental performance further enhanced, with more effective ventilation systems, upgraded air-scrubbing units, better vehicle washing facilities, higher wastewater treatment capacity, enhanced energy-saving management, improved facility energy efficiency, along with an improved appearance.
