LCSD to present third phase of lecture series "Genius of the System: When Art and Commerce Converge on Film"

     To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Hong Kong City Hall, the Film Programmes Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) launched the lecture series "Genius of the System: When Art and Commerce Converge on Film" as one of the commemorative programmes. Three lectures in the last phase of the series will be held between this December and February next year to explore masterpieces with high artistic values that were produced with low budgets under the movie studio system in Hollywood. The lectures will extend to the special contributions of Hong Kong movies to world cinema history under a business-oriented system and how business and the art of movies complement each other.

     Details of the lectures in the third phase are as follows:

Lecture 7
Topic: B Movies, the Glorious Underside of the System
Date: December 17 (Saturday)
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Sam Ho (curator, film researcher)
Content: A look into how B movies with limited budgets became excellent works of art under the studio system in Hollywood.

Lecture 8
Topic: The Genius of the Hong Kong System
Date: January 7 (Saturday)
Time: 4pm
Speakers: Priscilla Chan (Assistant Curator I of the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA)), Sam Ho (curator, film researcher)
Content: An exploration of the movie studio system in Hong Kong, studying how the contributions that filmmakers made in their own fields brought about the two golden periods of Hong Kong cinema history in the 1950s and 1980s. 

Lecture 9
Topic: When Industry Complements Art
Date: February 4 (Saturday)
Time: 4pm
Speaker: Sam Ho (curator, film researcher)
Content: An exploration of how business and art complement each other in the profit-driven film industry.

     The lecture series is curated by veteran film researcher Sam Ho. The first two phases reviewed the development of the Hollywood film industry from the 1920s to the 1950s, with five of the lectures already held from June to October.

     In addition, to facilitate understanding of the movie studio system in Hong Kong in Lecture 8, the Film Programmes Office will present a screening of the film, "Beauty Raised from the Dead" (1956), at 7.45pm on January 5 at the cinema of the HKFA before the lecture. The movie was directed by renowned director Lee Sun-fung and starred Pak Yin and Cheung Wood-yau, revered Cantonese film actors of their generation. The film is in Cantonese with Chinese-subtitled lyrics and a post-screening talk will be presented by Kenny Ng and Sam Ho.

     All lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will take place at the Recital Hall, Hong Kong City Hall (8/F, High Block). Each lecture will last for about two hours. Tickets for each lecture are priced at $80, and tickets for the screening of the film, "Beauty Raised from the Dead", are priced at $50. A package price of $100 is also offered for each purchase of one standard ticket for Lecture 8 together with one standard ticket for the film screening.      In order to comply with the requirements stipulated in the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F) and the relevant requirements of administrative instructions, members of the public are required to scan the "LeaveHomeSafe" venue QR code with their mobile phones/other mobile devices before being allowed to enter the indoor venues under the management of the LCSD. In accordance with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Vaccine Pass) Regulation (Cap. 599L) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, all persons entering indoor venues under the management of the LCSD must comply with the requirement of the Vaccine Pass. According to the latest requirements on the Vaccine Pass announced by the Government, all persons whose Vaccine Pass QR code is displayed in red or amber are not allowed to enter the cinema of the HKFA and performing arts venues under the management of the LCSD.
