​Hong Kong Customs on October 24 detected a large-scale methamphetamine trafficking case at Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 100 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated market value of about $60 million, inside a suspended electromagnetic separator.

     Through risk assessment, Customs on that day inspected an air cargo consignment, declared as carrying a suspended electromagnetic separator, arriving from Mexico via Qatar to Hong Kong for re-exporting to another country. Upon inspection, Customs officers found the batch of suspected methamphetamine concealed inside a false compartment of a suspended electromagnetic separator.

     An investigation is ongoing.

     Including this case, Customs has detected four dangerous drug trafficking cases using shipments of large-scale machines from American countries to Hong Kong. By adopting a risk management and intelligence-led approach, the department will continue to make necessary adjustments in deployment in accordance with changes in drug trafficking trends to intercept the inflow of drugs to Hong Kong.

     Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
