Subsidy amounts for Mainland University Study Subsidy Scheme in 2022/23 academic year announced

The Education Bureau (EDB) announced today (November 7) upward adjustments to the subsidy amounts of the means-tested subsidy and the non-means-tested subsidy for the Mainland University Study Subsidy Scheme (MUSSS).
A spokesperson for the EDB said, "The Government has refined the formula for calculating the subsidy amounts under the Scheme, with the introduction of a new subsidy item for travelling expenses, etc, and the subsidy level will be increased by about 5 per cent to 16 per cent, with a view to providing more apt support to Hong Kong students pursuing studies on the Mainland. The new subsidy levels will be implemented starting from the 2022/23 academic year."
The spokesperson said that MUSSS would benefit Hong Kong students pursuing undergraduate studies in 191 designated Mainland institutions, including the 129 institutions participating in the Scheme for Admission of Hong Kong Students to Mainland Higher Education Institutions in the 2022/23 academic year.
The adjusted means-tested subsidy and the non-means-tested subsidy will be disbursed to eligible students based on the distance between the location of their institutions and Hong Kong, which will be grouped under three categories. Details of the subsidy rates under the different categories are set out at Annex.
The application period for the MUSSS 2022/23 has closed. The EDB is currently processing the applications with a view to notifying individual applicants of the application results by the first quarter of 2023, and releasing the subsidies to recipients in batches before March 2023.
The MUSSS aims to support Hong Kong students in pursuing undergraduate studies on the Mainland and ensure that no students will be deprived of post-secondary educational opportunities due to a lack of means. The MUSSS comprises two components: means-tested subsidy and non-means-tested subsidy. The subsidised period covers the normal duration of the undergraduate programme pursued by the student concerned in the designated Mainland institution. Eligible applicants may only receive either a means-tested subsidy or a non-means-tested subsidy in the same academic year.
