***********************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

As at 0.00am today (October 18), a total of 1 834 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 are currently hospitalised for treatment, including 264 new patients. Among the patients staying in isolation facilities, 494 patients are in isolation wards, 130 patients are in second-tier isolation wards, 476 patients are in the North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre, of which 204 in total are new patients. There are seven newly reported critical patients and seven newly reported serious patients. There are a total of 23 patients in critical condition and 32 are in serious condition, of which eight critical patients are receiving intensive care. Moreover, there are 188 patients who have recovered, including 154 patients who have been discharged. In addition, seven patients who passed away in public hospitals were reported.

In the fifth wave of the epidemic, there are 76 542 patients who have recovered so far, including 76 206 patients who have been discharged. And since early 2020, there are 88 922 patients who have recovered, including 88 586 patients who have been discharged.

In addition, a 31-month-old boy was sent to the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital yesterday (October 17) with a fever and tested positive for COVID-19. The boy has not received COVID-19 vaccination. He is currently receiving treatment in the paediatric intensive care unit and is in critical condition. COVID-19 vaccination can effectively protect children and adolescents against COVID-19 and effectively reduce serious illness and mortality. The Hospital Authority urges parents to arrange for their children to receive COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible.

Moreover, a 90-year-old male patient in an orthopaedics and traumatology rehabilitation ward of Rehabilitation Block of Tuen Mun Hospital tested positive for COVID-19 on October 13. The hospital commenced a contact tracing investigation. Three more male patients, aged 55 to 74, also tested positive. The hospital is investigating the linkage among the cases concerned.

All patients are being treated in isolation and are in stable condition. Admission and visiting arrangements for the ward concerned have been suspended. Thorough cleaning and disinfection operations have been conducted in the areas concerned, while infection control measures have been enhanced.

The Hospital Authority will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.
