LegCo Subcommittee visits waste treatment and resource recovery facilities (with photos)

     The Legislative Council Subcommittee to Study Policy Issues Relating to Municipal Solid Waste Charging, Recovery and Recycling visited waste treatment and resource recovery facilities in Tuen Mun today (October 13) to learn about the progress and effectiveness of the work of the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) in promoting waste reduction and recycling in the community, waste-to-energy and waste-to-resources.

     Members first visited GREEN@TUEN MUN, a recycling station, and observed the operation of its smart recycling systems. Members were briefed on EPD's efforts in enhancing the efficiency of community recycling services through application of technology.

     Members then visited Y·PARK, a yard waste recycling centre, and T·PARK, a sludge treatment facility, in Tsang Tsui, Tuen Mun, to learn about their operations. Members also gained a better understanding on EPD's initiatives in enhancing public awareness on environmental protection and eliminating negative public impressions of waste treatment facilities.

     During the visit, Members also discussed with the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, on how to further develop the waste-to-energy and waste-to-resources facilities, with a view to gradually replacing the disposal of municipal solid waste in landfills.

     A total of 12 members and non-members of the Subcommittee to Study Policy Issues Relating to Municipal Solid Waste Charging, Recovery and Recycling attended the visit.
