Government spokesman responds to media enquiries
************************************************

In response to media enquiries about remarks by the United States Department of State officials quoted by the media, a Government spokesman said today (October 9):

"The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSARG) has all along been implementing and enforcing fully the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council. We note that certain countries may impose unilateral sanctions against certain places on the basis of their own considerations. The HKSARG does not implement, nor do we have the legal authority to take action on, unilateral sanctions imposed by other jurisdictions.

Being an international financial and trading centre, and closely connected with the world market with the strong support from the motherland, Hong Kong has clear distinctive status and edges: including the rule of law and implementation of the common law system, internationally aligned regulatory regimes, a robust financial system, a transparent business environment, free flow of capital, a free trade and investment regime, a simple and competitive tax system, an efficient and clean government, etc. These strengths have long been internationally recognised."
