Statement by Social Welfare Department on Po Leung Kuk's announcement to establish independent review committee

The Social Welfare Department (SWD) noted that Po Leung Kuk has announced the establishment of an independent review committee today (October 8) to review and follow up on the suspected child maltreatment incident in its child care centre. The SWD hopes that the committee will conduct a comprehensive and in-depth review and make recommendations on improvement proposals and measures.

After unearthing the suspected child maltreatment incident during its inspection at the centre on September 16, the SWD has required Po Leung Kuk to take follow-up actions, including submission of special incident reports, thorough investigation into the incident, as well as the tendering of a detailed and comprehensive report. The SWD will review and study the report while continuing to closely monitor the management, services and operations of the child care centre to ensure compliance with relevant laws as well as service quality and child protection requirements.
