The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) today (October 5) published the investigation report (6/2022) on the investigation into a serious incident involving a Geronimo² M-27 paraglider that collided with a moving lorry during an emergency landing in Sai Kung on April 28, 2020.

     At about 3pm on that day, a paraglider pilot took off from the Ma On Shan paragliding activity area and planned to land at Sha Kok Mei, which is outside the boundaries of the Ma On Shan paragliding activity area designated by the Civil Aviation Department. At 3.12pm, the Police received a report that the pilot was injured after a collision with a moving lorry near the junction of Tai Mong Tsai Road and Mei Yu Street. He suffered leg injury and was taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for medical treatment.

     The investigation was conducted by a team of professional investigators in adherence to international standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization. The investigation concluded that the pilot probably lost effective control of the paraglider due to warm rising air and conditions of local wind and gusts when approaching the planned landing area, and collided with the lorry during the emergency landing. The investigation team has made one safety recommendation to the Civil Aviation Department and paragliding organisations.

     "The investigation was conducted by the AAIA with the objective of identifying the circumstances and causes of the serious incident with a view to preventing recurrence," an AAIA spokesperson said.
