Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Kwong Wah Hospital
*********************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding an earlier announcement on Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carrier cases, the spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital gave the following update today (September 30):

Following contact tracing investigation, two more female patients (aged 61 and 90) in the medical ward were identified as carriers of VRE while not having signs of infection. One patient has been discharged earlier. The remaining patient has been transferred to TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital, and she is now being treated under isolation and is in stable condition.

The hospital has adopted a series of enhanced infection control measures to prevent the spread of VRE in accordance with the prevailing guidelines:

1. Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the wards concerned; and
2. Application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene for staff and patients.

The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the patients. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
