Film Archive to premiere two restored versions of Kunqu opera films in support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (with photos)

     In support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will roll out a special screening programme to premiere two restored Kunqu opera films directed by Yonfan on October 27 and November 5 at the HKFA Cinema and the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) respectively, allowing audiences to appreciate the arts of Kunqu opera and film through the two classics.

Restored version of "Breaking the Willow" (2003) (world premiere)
October 27 (Thursday) at 7.30pm

4K restored version of "Peony Pavilion" (2001) (world premiere)
November 5 (Saturday) at 7.30pm
Screening at the Grand Theatre of the HKCC

     "Breaking the Willow" features Zhang Jiqing, the "Queen of Kunqu" and Wang Fang, a younger performer in two famous Kunqu opera excerpts "The Obsessed Dream" and "Farewell at the Yang Pass" respectively while the film "Peony Pavilion", which is inspired by the classic Kunqu opera of the same title, tells the emotional story of Cuihua, played by Rie Miyazawa, and Ronglan who is a fan of Kunqu opera, played by Joey Wang. Both films are in Putonghua with Chinese and English subtitles.

     In 2005, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated October 27 of every year as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. It promotes awareness of the importance of preserving audio-visual documents from the past, which play an integral role in recording local and regional cultures.

     In order to comply with the requirements stipulated in the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, members of the public are required to scan the "LeaveHomeSafe" venue QR code with their mobile phones/other mobile devices before being allowed to enter the HKFA and the HKCC for necessary contact tracing if a confirmed case is found. In accordance with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Vaccine Pass) Regulation (Cap. 599L) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, all persons entering indoor venues under the management of the LCSD must comply with the relevant requirement of the Vaccine Pass. According to the latest requirement on the Vaccine Pass announced by the Government, all persons with their Vaccine Pass QR codes displayed in red or amber are not allowed to enter the HKFA and the HKCC under the management of the LCSD.
