Hong Kong films make waves in Sydney to celebrate 25th anniversary of establishment of HKSAR (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (Sydney ETO) supported the "Making Waves - Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema" to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Eight Hong Kong films were screened from September 9 to 11 in Sydney, Australia to showcase the vibrancy and diversity of Hong Kong film industry.

     Presented by Create Hong Kong in collaboration with the New South Wales Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association, the Sydney edition of the programme featured the screenings of Table for Six, The First Girl I Loved, Hand Rolled Cigarette, Keep Rolling, Infernal Affairs (4K restored), Tales from the Occult, Limbo and Drifting, showcasing to Australian audience a selection of Hong Kong classics and new creations.

     The Sydney ETO hosted a reception before the screening of Table for Six to kick-start the programme. Addressing the audience, the Director of the Sydney ETO, Miss Trista Lim, said that Hong Kong is a leading film-making centre in Asia and is renowned as a cosmopolitan city full of creativity. A lot of actors, actresses, directors, cinematographers and producers are popular in the world, and Hong Kong movies have also been inspirational to many outside Hong Kong, connecting Hong Kong with other global cities around the world.

     "Talents are the key to arts and cultural excellence. The HKSAR Government will continue to put emphasis on nurturing talents in different artistic and creative fields. For the film industry, we will nurture budding directors and scriptwriting talents through the Film Development Fund," she said.

     Miss Lim added that the National 14th Five-Year Plan indicates clear support for Hong Kong's development into a hub for arts and cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. Hong Kong will seize upon its unique creative atmosphere where Chinese and Western cultures meet to position Hong Kong as Asia's city of culture and creativity.

     Director Sunny Chan and actress Stephy Tang of Table for Six also met with the Sydney audience via a live holo-presence before the start of the screening.
