AAIA publishes investigation report on serious incident of aircraft veering off runway

At 10.49am, the aircraft touched down at the then North Runway of HKIA. On noting that the aircraft did not exit the runway via taxiways A6 or A5, Air Traffic Control instructed it to vacate via taxiway A4. However, the aircraft also missed taxiway A4 and deviated from the runway centreline, veering off to the grass area slightly beyond the right-hand side of the runway. The aircraft eventually stopped with its nose wheel and right-hand main landing gear wheels resting on the grass area. Only the main wheels of the aircraft suffered minor damage and no one was injured. The occurrence was classified as a serious incident according to the criteria of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The investigation identified that the adoption of autobrake mode before landing was inappropriate. Upon missing taxiway A6, the aircraft was unable to decelerate effectively to vacate the runway via taxiways A5 or A4. Moreover, the weather was inclement during the landing, and the directional control of the aircraft was affected by the lateral wind and standing water on the runway, etc, at the last stage of the rollout. The investigation team has made one safety recommendation which the airline has adopted for taking preventive actions.
The investigation was conducted by a team of professional investigators in adherence to the ICAO's international standards. "The objective of the investigation was to identify the circumstances and causes of the serious incident with a view to preventing a recurrence," an AAIA spokesperson said.
