The Social Welfare Department (SWD) announced today (August 29) that, in light of the rising occupancy rate of the Temporary Quarantine Centre at AsiaWorld-Expo, the Kai Tak Quarantine Centre at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal will come into operation on September 2.

The Kai Tak Quarantine Centre is equipped with 786 beds in total, among which 260 beds will come into operation on September 2. The centre will receive residents of the residential care homes for the elderly who have been identified as close contacts by the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health (DH).

The centre will provide basic meals and nursing support without charge. The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and the Haven of Hope Christian Service will form care teams to provide temporary care services at the centre, while the DH will facilitate the medical surveillance of the elderly. The SWD expresses heartfelt gratitude to the teams for their provision of service at the centre at short notice.

The SWD will continue to monitor the development of the epidemic closely. If necessary, the remaining beds at the centre will commence operation in the first instance.
