HAD holds Ceremony of Celebration Activities for Ethnic Minorities for 25th Anniversary of Establishment of HKSAR to share joy of Hong Kong's return to motherland (with photos)

The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, Miss Alice Mak; the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Alice Cheung; the Executive Director, Charities and Community of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), Dr Gabriel Leung; and the Acting Assistant Director of Broadcasting (Radio & Corporate Programming), Ms Amy Kwong, together with other guests, officiated at the ceremony. They encouraged ethnic minorities to participate in a series of celebration activities, including multi-cultural shows, carnivals and competitions, organised by support service centres for ethnic minorities and community support teams commissioned by the HAD.
Speaking at the ceremony, Miss Mak said Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city with over 300 000 non-ethnic Chinese people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. They have made achievements and contributions to society and are well respected by other members of society. She said that one of the "four proposals" laid down by President Xi Jinping for the Government of the HKSAR in his important speech delivered on July 1 is working together to safeguard harmony and stability. Miss Mak said she believed that, with concerted efforts from all walks of life, we will join hands to start a new chapter for Hong Kong together.
"To develop an inclusive and harmonious society, we are committed to providing support services to help ethnic minorities integrate into the community. The Home Affairs Department renders dedicated services and programmes through a network of support service centres to provide learning classes, integration activities and counselling services. Over 90 000 beneficiaries benefit from the services each year," Miss Mak said.
At the ceremony, Miss Mak presented the Outstanding Award of the Harmony Scholarships Scheme to nine primary and secondary students to recognise their outstanding performance in promotion of racial harmony. A video preview showcasing various celebration activities and fantastic stage performances by ethnic minorities as well as local performers were also featured at the ceremony.
The ceremony was jointly presented by the HAD and the Radio Television Hong Kong. It was under the exclusive sponsorship of the HKJC, and was one of the activities organised by the HKSAR Government to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. Organisers of the celebration activities include Hong Kong Christian Service, Hong Kong Community Network, Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, Hong Kong Nepalese Federation, International Social Service Hong Kong Branch, New Home Association, Pakistan Islamic Welfare Union, The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council and Yuen Long Town Hall.
