Holding Centre at Tin Shui Wai Sports Centre to commence operation on August 25
*******************************************************************************
The Social Welfare Department (SWD) announced today (August 21) that, in light of the rising number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 recently, the holding centre at Tin Shui Wai Sports Centre will commence operation on August 25.

The holding centre at Tin Shui Wai Sports Centre will receive elderly COVID-19 patients who are asymptomatic or showing mild symptoms. With 130 beds, the centre provides basic meals and nursing support without charge. New Frontier Health Corporation will form a care team to provide temporary care services at the centre, while Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong will provide medical support.

In addition, some elderly people and persons with disabilities contracted the disease in the community may lack proper care. On top of receiving COVID-19 residents from residential care homes for the elderly or residential care homes for persons with disabilities, all holding centres under the SWD will also receive those patients among elderly people or persons with disabilities in the community upon referrals made by the Hospital Authority or the Department of Health.

The SWD earlier set up holding centres at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre and Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre which came into operation on June 25. The care services of these centres are provided by the Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon and Tang Tat Elderlycare. Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong and Quality HealthCare have earlier taken over the medical support of the holding centres at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre and Siu Sai Wan Sports Centre respectively. The SWD expresses gratitude to the organisations and teams for providing care services and medical support to the centres.

The SWD will continue to monitor the development of the epidemic closely. If necessary, and upon liaison with relevant bureaux and departments, the SWD will swiftly mobilise resources and prepare venues to activate other holding centres or quarantine facilities.
