Film Archive presents "More Brilliance, Still Different - The D & B Story Redux" exhibition (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
Following the "A Different Brilliance - The D & B Story" exhibition in 2020, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department launched the "More Brilliance, Still Different - The D & B Story Redux" exhibition from today (July 29) to February 12 next year at the Exhibition Hall of the HKFA. The D & B Films Company (D & B) together with Golden Harvest and Cinema City were the film industry's "big three" in the 1980s to the 1990s. The films produced by the D & B covered a wide variety of topics, expanding the scope of Hong Kong movies at that time apart from commercial films. The exhibition utilises people as an entry point to explore D & B's capable production team and their contributions.

Based on oral-history interviews with over 40 members of the D & B production team, the exhibition enables visitors to learn more about the company's operational structure, production policies and its creative environment. The large number of interviewees is unprecedented for HKFA exhibitions, with big names such as Sammo Hung, John Sham, Michelle Yeoh, Yuen Wo-ping, Sylvia Chang, Richard Ng, Cecilia Yip and Chin Ka-lok. Through the interviewees' memories, visitors can capture D & B's rarely known history. These interview videos are complemented by displays of seldom-seen stills, scripts and award trophies.

In addition, a visual collection of special moments from D & B films has been produced through special video editing and projection techniques to offer audiences an immersive experience in D & B's imaginative fairy tales. Another section of the exhibition features recordings which offer insights into "Passion" (1986) and "An Autumn's Tale" (1987), directed by Sylvia Chang and Mabel Cheung respectively. Based on the scripts donated by the two directors, each line of dialogue is correlated with a behind-the-scene memory, reminiscing on the filming experiences of classic scenes. Moreover, the vintage coin-operated telephone model used by the protagonists in "An Autumn's Tale" is available for photo-taking.

To complement the exhibition, the HKFA will hold a seminar each month from October to February next year. Speakers include Dr Ng Chun-hungIp Kwong-kim, Gordon Chan, Chan Hing-kai, Shu Kei, William Yuen, Sam Ho, Joyce Yang, Poon Hang-sang and Janice Chow. All seminars will be conducted in Cantonese while limited seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Admission to both the exhibition and the seminars are free. For details, please call 2739 2139 or visit www.filmarchive.gov.hk/en_US/web/hkfa/pe-event-2022-e-dnb.html.

To give audiences a more comprehensive view of D & B's production, the HKFA will screen numerous D & B films from tomorrow (July 30) to December 18 at the HKFA Cinema. Tickets are priced at $45 each and are available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk). For credit card telephone bookings, please call 2111 5999.
