******************************************************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will stage the "Concert - A Dialogue Between Jazz and Guangdong Music" in August, where Guangdong and jazz music talents will gather together to perform an innovative concert, showcasing the unique rhythms generated from the cultural blend of East meets West, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). This concert is under the exclusive sponsorship of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), and is one of the many initiatives supported by the HKJC's approved donation of $630 million to the Government of the HKSAR to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, demonstrating that the HKJC is resolute in pursuing its purpose of acting continuously for the betterment of society, all in support of creating stronger communities together.

Veteran musician Chiu Tsang-hei will be the concert's music advisor, while local composer Ng Cheuk-yin will be one of the ensemble arrangers. Jazz guitarist Teriver Cheung will be the music director and another arranger for the ensemble pieces of the concert. Cheung will take to the stage with his jazz chamber group Ensemble Transience and local musicians Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble. They will play renowned pieces of Guangdong and jazz music, and selected Chinese and Western favourites with rearrangements in crossover music genres, bringing a refreshing concert experience to audiences with a harmonious blend of Chinese and Western culture. There will also be a strong line-up of guest artists including renowned conductor Ho Man-chuen, gaohu maestro Yu Qiwei and dongxiao virtuoso Tam Po-shek, as well as Chan Pik-sum (erhu/gaohu), Bryan Lai (yangqin), Crisel Consunji (vocal) and Kong Chun-kit (nanyin), in the concert.

The first half of the concert will feature Guangdong music as the theme, with the Guangdong and jazz music ensemble "The Dance of the Golden Snake" as an enchanting opening. The programme will include a refreshing song entitled "In Celebration of Good Times", two popular music pieces selected from the medley entitled "Songs for Martial Heroes: The Demi-gods and Semi-devils" composed by Joseph Koo, and the Hong Kong premiere of Chen Siang's work "Three Cantonese Symphonic Pictures". Focusing on jazz styles, the second half of the concert will contain rearranged all-time Chinese and Western favourites such as Joseph Koo's "Rainbow Round My Shoulder" and "The Bund", as well as John Lennon's "Imagine". The finale will include "The Girl From Ipanema", a rearranged piece with a mix of samba rhythm, Guangdong nanyin and Western female vocal singing, to conclude the concert with the perfect fusion of Chinese and Western music.

Music director of the concert, Teriver Cheung, is a guitarist who represents a new generation of jazz artists on the international stage. He is also one of the active composers in Hong Kong. Cheung has worked with many leading artists such as Latin Grammy Award winner Eddie Gomez, and has played as a guest performer with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and various music groups. He formed the chamber group Ensemble Transience in 2017. Focusing on the combination of modern jazz and classical music that incorporates improvisation into composed music, Cheung has led the chamber group to perform in major music events around the world.

Founded in 2003, Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble has a mission of developing Chinese music culture in Hong Kong. Apart from learning the traditional Lingnan music genres, it is also devoted to developing original Chinese music locally.
