Euphonious music of London Philharmonic Orchestra to return to Hong Kong City Hall in August to celebrate HKSAR 25th anniversary

     The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present the programme "London Philharmonic Orchestra (Concert Screening)" in August. With exquisite programming and an innovative soundscape audio system, the two screenings produced by the London Philharmonic Orchestra will bring audiences a festive sound from afar at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall (HKCH), to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the HKCH's 60th anniversary. This programme is under the exclusive sponsorship of The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), which is one of the many initiatives supported by the HKJC's approved donation of $630 million to the Government of the HKSAR to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, demonstrating that the HKJC is resolute in pursuing its purpose of acting continuously for the betterment of society, all in support of creating stronger communities together.

     Under the baton of its new Principal Conductor, Edward Gardner, the Orchestra will feature violinist Nicola Benedetti, who will perform two specially curated concerts with meaningful programming. In the first screening, the Orchestra will present the world premiere of "Lullabies", a commissioned work by local composer Charles Kwong for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of HKCH, and perform Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64". In the second screening, the programme includes Bruch's "Violin Concerto in G minor, Op. 26" and Elgar's "Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, 'Enigma'".

     To reach beyond territorial and audiovisual boundaries, and deliver a powerful sense of a live performance, the concert screenings will be accompanied by an advanced soundscape audio system with multiple sound sources and an enhanced loudspeaker setting which enable audiences to re-encounter the Orchestra, with its rising and falling tones in HKCH, known as Hong Kong's "youngest monument", after 60 years.

     Founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham, the London Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the finest orchestras on the international stage. Being artist-in-residence at various performing venues, the Orchestra performs regularly in cities around the United Kingdom and tours internationally. In 1962, the Orchestra celebrated the inauguration of HKCH with five concerts at the venue's Concert Hall, which was their debut in Hong Kong during its first Asia tour. Apart from live concerts, the Orchestra has recorded soundtracks for numerous blockbuster movies, including "The Lord of the Rings".

     The "London Philharmonic Orchestra (Concert Screening)" will be held at 8pm on August 20 (Saturday) and 3pm on August 21 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall of HKCH.      In order to comply with the requirements stipulated in the Prevention and Control of Disease (Requirements and Directions) (Business and Premises) Regulation (Cap. 599F) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, members of the public are required to scan the "LeaveHomeSafe" venue QR code with their mobile phones/other mobile devices before being allowed to enter the performing arts venues managed by the LCSD for necessary contact tracing if a confirmed case is found. In accordance with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Vaccine Pass) Regulation (Cap. 599L) and relevant requirements of administrative instructions, all persons entering indoor venues under the management of the LCSD must comply with the requirement of the Vaccine Pass.
