Update on Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae and Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in New Territories West Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for New Territories West Cluster made the following announcement today (July 5):
 
     Tuen Mun Hospital has an update on a cluster of patients infected with Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) in a medicine and geriatrics ward announced earlier. The hospital has conducted a screening and confirmed another 51-year-old male patient as a carrier of CPE. He is currently in isolation and is in stable condition.
 
     Meanwhile, Pok Oi Hospital has an update on an earlier announcement of a cluster of patients confirmed to be carriers of Multi-drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) in a medicine and geriatrics ward. In accordance with the prevailing guidelines, the hospital commenced contact tracing and confirmed two more male patients (aged 71 and 72) as carriers of MDRA. Both patients are still hospitalised in isolation and are in stable condition.
 
     The following enhanced infection control measures have continued to be implemented in the two hospitals according to the established guidelines:
 
  1. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of the wards concerned;
  2. Application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene for staff and patients; and
  3. Enhanced patient and environmental screening procedures.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The two hospitals will continue to closely monitor the situation of the wards concerned.
