Eight enormous fossil skeleton dinosaurs to emerge at Hong Kong Science Museum (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the Hong Kong Science Museum will stage a large-scale dinosaur exhibition, "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big Eight - Dinosaur Revelation" at the museum from July 8 (Friday), offering the public free admission to visiting eight of the most iconic creatures, original fossil material and some of the most complete fossil skeletons from the dinosaur kingdom. Making use of multimedia projection techniques, special lighting effects and blending the worlds of scientific research and unique scenography, audiences will be offered immersive experiences to appreciate the dinosaurs in the exhibition.

Speaking at the opening ceremony today (July 5), the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Kevin Yeung, said that "Hong Kong has always been an ideal platform for exchanges between the East and the West. We have unparalleled endowments that enable Hong Kong to become a hub for arts and culture, while at the same time we are blessed with the capabilities of showcasing the magnificence of Chinese civilisation. The new Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau will formulate long-term policies on arts, creative industries, sports and tourism to achieve the goals of the 14th Five-Year Plan that include positioning Hong Kong as an East-meets-West centre for international arts and cultural exchanges, promoting the economic and social well-being of Hong Kong as well as providing the younger generations with rich opportunities and pathways. In the coming days, the HKSAR Government will seize opportunities to nurture artistic talents and leverage technology to enhance collaboration among cities all over the world so that we can learn from and benefit one another. It is hoped that we can contribute towards the arts and culture of our nation."

Other officiating guests included Steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Mr Lester G Huang; the Chairman of the First Initiative Foundation (FIF), Ms Michelle Ong; the Chairman of the Museum Advisory Committee, Mr Stanley Wong; the Hong Kong Transport Services Director of the MTR Corporation, Ms Jeny Yeung; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Vincent Liu; and the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Science Museum, Ms Paulina Chan.

Jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the FIF, and jointly organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum and the FIF, the exhibition is exclusively sponsored by the HKJC; and supported by the MTR Corporation.

The exhibition is one of the many initiatives supported by the HKJC's approved donation of $630 million to the Government to mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, demonstrating that the HKJC is resolute in pursuing its purpose of acting continuously for the betterment of society, all in support of creating a stronger community together.

The eight precious fossil specimens of prehistoric creatures and reconstructed skeleton models displayed in the exhibition come from museums and academic 0organisations in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and Morocco. Except for the Tyrannosaurus, the other seven fossil skeletons are on display in Hong Kong for the first time. Owing to the enormous size of the exhibits, the museum has specially designated a total area of around 2,000 square metres at the exhibition hall for the exhibition. Highlighted exhibits include the most complete Allosaurus skeleton ever found, which is over 90 per cent complete; and the world premiere of one of the largest ceratopsians ever reported, Willard the Triceratops, standing at a height of over three metres. A baby sauropod is displayed in its original buried state, which is the best-preserved specimen of a young long-necked dinosaur. This is first time to showcase the 1:1 reconstructed skeleton models of Spinosaurus, the "river monster", and Hatzegopteryx, the largest flying creature ever, which are reproduced based on accurate scientific data. Other exhibits include the skeletons of Tyrannosaurus, Hesperosaurus and Diplodocus.

"The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big Eight - Dinosaur Revelation" is another large-scale dinosaur exhibition, succeeding "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs" in 2013. With a novel curatorial approach, the exhibition reveals new scientific insights in palaeontology. The museum combines appealing palaeontology artwork, projection mapping technology and multimedia projection to rebuild the unique amazing scenery, bringing visitors back to the prehistoric world. Besides offering visitors a unique visiting experience, the exhibition also enables visitors to understand the truth of the extinction of prehistoric creatures, and lessons for humans to avoid extinction. The exhibition production team is a respected group of internationally acclaimed professionals, comprising members from Hong Kong, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, etc. The exhibition is supported by the FIF, and the foundation's move demonstrates its dedication to contributing to the community and bridging the gap between Hong Kong and the world.

The exhibition will run from July 8 to November 16 at the Hong Kong Science Museum located at 2 Science Museum Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, and admission is free. During the exhibition period, the general admission fees to permanent exhibitions will be specially waived to offer a better visiting experience for visitors to enjoy the exhibitions. All visitors of "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: The Big Eight - Dinosaur Revelation" and permanent exhibitions, including Museum Pass holders, are required to make an advance booking through the e-booking system on the exhibition website big8dinosaurs.hk. The system will be launched at 0.00am of July 6 and reservations can be made up to seven days in advance. Visitors who make a booking should arrive within the admission time and present the QR code on the confirmation email for free admission. Members of the public are advised to plan their visits beforehand.

During the exhibition period, the Hong Kong Science Museum will organise a series of extension and educational activities for all ages, including the "A Night with Dinosaurs" Sleepover Programme, Dino Yoga Classes, lectures by palaeontologists, film shows, maker workshops, children's experiment classes and accessibility guided tours-cum-workshops. Various LCSD venues will also launch tie-in activities, extending the enthusiasm for dinosaurs to the whole city.
