The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD), in collaboration with the Home Affairs Department (HAD), the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Housing Department (HD), will launch a two-week Territory-wide Clean-up Operation in all districts from June 17 to June 30, and appeals to members of the public for their participation and efforts in maintaining cleanliness in the household, the community and public places.
      
     An FEHD spokesman said, "The FEHD has invited relevant departments to jointly conduct the Territory-wide Clean-up Operation, which strives to maintain a clean and hygienic environment to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, as well as support the anti-epidemic work. During the Operation period, the FEHD will implement a series of measures, including stepping up street cleaning and rodent prevention and control work; strengthening the cleaning of venues and facilities under its management, such as public markets, cooked food centres, hawker bazaars, public toilets, public bathhouses and refuse collection points; and enhancing cleaning work at illegal refuse dumping spots such as alleys, roadside grass areas and lawns, etc."
      
     During the Territory-wide Clean-up Operation, the HAD will arrange the 18 District Offices (DOs) to assist private buildings in need, especially "three-nil" buildings and other old buildings, to carry out cleaning services at common areas of the buildings to demonstrate good building management practice. In addition, DOs will also co-ordinate with other relevant departments to launch inter-departmental joint operations to remove abandoned vehicles from the streets. As well, the HD will conduct the Estate Cleaning Operation in the public housing estates under the HD's management, and the LCSD will enhance cleaning and pest control work in parks and other recreation venues under its management.
      
     During the period, the FEHD will continue to take stringent enforcement actions and issue fixed penalty notices to offenders in breach of the public cleanliness and obstruction regulation, and a zero tolerance strategy will be adopted against illegal posting of street signs and posters, littering, spitting, and dog fouling. The FEHD reminds the public and shop operators not to defy the law.
      
     The spokesman added that with a view to achieving a better result for the Territory-wide Clean-up Operation, the FEHD will co-operate with the relevant departments. For example, the FEHD will enhance street cleaning and pest control services at public areas in the vicinity of the "three-nil" buildings where each DO provides cleaning services at common parts of the "three-nil" buildings. The FEHD will also co-operate with the LCSD and the HD in carrying out cleaning and pest control work in areas under their respective purviews by stepping up cleaning and pest control work at public areas and complaint hotspots nearby.
      
     The government departments' efforts alone will not suffice. The spokesman appealed to members of the public for their participation, especially to maintain cleanliness in the household and the community, with a view to improving environmental hygiene and the cityscape through concerted efforts.
