Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Kwong Wah Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
 
     The spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital made the following announcement today (June 6):
      
     A 71-year-old male surgical in-patient was infected with Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) on May 30. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital commenced contact tracing. Four more male patients (aged 60 to 84) were confirmed to be VRE carriers but without clinical symptoms. Three of the male patients have been discharged earlier, while a 65-year-old male patient is still hospitalised in stable condition. The above-mentioned 71-year-old patient is in critical condition due to his underlying disease.
      
     The ward concerned has adopted the following enhanced infection control measures:
 
1.    Enhanced hand hygiene and stringent contact precautions;
2.    Enhanced attention to contamination-prone procedures; and
3.    Enhanced disinfection and cleansing of the ward concerned.
 
     The hospital will closely monitor the situation of the ward concerned. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
