The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal, Mr Andrew Cheung Kui-nung, today (June 2) expressed deep sadness over the passing of the Honourable Sir Gerard Brennan, GBS, former Non-Permanent Judge (NPJ) of the Court of Final Appeal (CFA).

     "Sir Gerard served as an NPJ of the CFA from 2000 to 2012. He had sat on the CFA on many occasions and written important judgments which greatly enriched our jurisprudence. He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2013 for his contributions to Hong Kong," Mr Cheung said.

     Sir Gerard was born in Australia in 1928. He was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1951 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1965. After a distinguished career at the Queensland Bar, he was appointed a Judge of the Australian Industrial Court and an Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory in 1976. He was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia in 1977. In 1981, he was appointed to the Bench of the High Court of Australia. From 1995 to 1998, he served as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.

     "On behalf of the Judiciary, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family," Mr Cheung said.
