REO's clarification on media reports about sixth-term Chief Executive Election
******************************************************************************
In response to the media reports and enquiries on the sixth-term Chief Executive (CE) Election, alleging that the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) wrongly informed Professor Arthur Li that he was "not a member of the Election Committee", the REO made the following clarification today (April 14):

The REO was not involved in or aware of the discussions about the submission of nomination forms between Professor Arthur Li and the election campaign office of the concerned person running for the CE Election. On top of that, Professor Li has not made enquiries or verification with the REO regarding his eligibility as a member of the Election Committee.

Professor Li has registered as an ex-officio member of the Legal Subsector of the Election Committee by virtue of his identity as a Hong Kong member of the Committee for the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region under the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. The Candidate Eligibility Review Committee determined his registration as an ex-officio member as valid on January 26, 2022. A press release and a Government Gazette notice were issued.

After Professor Li completed the written oath, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) updated the final register of members of the Election Committee on February 8, 2022, accordingly, and published a notice in the Gazette (www.gld.gov.hk/egazette/pdf/20222646e/egn20222646208.pdf).

"The ERO has updated the final register of members of the Election Committee and made a public announcement in accordance with the relevant statutory requirements. The accusation that the REO has made the relevant mistake is factually incorrect," the spokesman said.
