Hong Kong film screened at Dubai's Cinema Akil (with photos)

     With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai (Dubai ETO), the Hong Kong film "Hand Rolled Cigarette" directed by Chan Kin-long was screened on April 1 (Dubai time) at Dubai's Cinema Akil. This was the first major cultural event organised by the Dubai ETO since its opening in October 2021.

     The screening drew the interest of some 100 local film enthusiasts and members of the Hong Kong community in the United Arab Emirates. Speaking to the audience ahead of the screening, the Director-General of the Dubai ETO, Mr Damian Lee, said that the office was proud to support, for the first time, the screening of a Hong Kong film in the Middle East region. He stressed that Hong Kong, apart from being an international financial and trading centre, is also a thriving cultural hub.

     He pointed out that Hong Kong has continued to forge ahead with developing hardware facilities such as the M+ museum, which opened in November 2021, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, slated to open in mid-2022. "At the same time, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region provides staunch support to Hong Kong's film industry. Notably, the film 'Hand Rolled Cigarette' is one such beneficiary of government funding through the Film Development Fund," he added.

     Furthermore, Mr Lee remarked that the Government continues to welcome top talents from all over the world to pursue their careers in Hong Kong. "Specifically, those working in the 13 professions designated in the Talent List of Hong Kong, including creative industries and performing arts professionals, enjoy immigration facilitation under the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme," he said.

     As for the Dubai ETO, Mr Lee emphasised that the office will continue to collaborate with partners in the region to promote Hong Kong's creative and cultural industries, including introducing quality Hong Kong films and talents to audiences in the region.
