Ricky Chu reappointed as Chairperson of Equal Opportunities Commission
**********************************************************************
The Government announced today (March 4) that the Chief Executive has reappointed Mr Ricky Chu Man-kin as the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for a term of two years commencing from April 11, 2022, in accordance with the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 480).

"Since his appointment as the Chairperson of the EOC in April 2019, Mr Chu has demonstrated his able leadership and strong commitment to the work of the EOC," a Government spokesman said.

"Under his leadership, the EOC has continued to effectively implement the four anti-discrimination ordinances (i.e. Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Family Status Discrimination Ordinance and Race Discrimination Ordinance). Among others, the Discrimination Legislation (Miscellaneous Amendments) Ordinance 2020 and the Sex Discrimination (Amendment) Ordinance 2021 were passed by the Legislative Council in June 2020 and March 2021 respectively, to enhance protection from discrimination and harassment under the four anti-discrimination ordinances, including to strengthen legal protection for breastfeeding women. The EOC has already stepped up publicity and public education to facilitate better understanding of the scope and effect of the amendment ordinances by different sectors of the community.

"The EOC has also established a designated Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit to raise public awareness on sexual harassment, and to act as the first port of call for victims of sexual harassment. In addition, the EOC has promoted equal opportunities in the community in a proactive manner and enhanced public knowledge of the EOC through various publicity and educational initiatives.

"We are confident that under Mr Chu's leadership, the EOC will continue to actively promote equal opportunities and eliminate discrimination, and to build a harmonious and caring Hong Kong," the spokesperson added.
