Tung Chung Line Extension gazetted
**********************************
The Government published in the Gazette today (December 10) the railway scheme for the Tung Chung Line (TCL) Extension in accordance with the Railways Ordinance (Cap. 519).

The TCL Extension project is one of the seven recommended railway schemes under the Railway Development Strategy 2014.  It mainly comprises two parts, namely an extension of the existing TCL to a new terminal station at Tung Chung West (TCW) and a new intermediate railway station at Tung Chung East (TCE) reclamation area between Sunny Bay Station and Tung Chung Station.

A government spokesman said, "The Tung Chung New Town Extension (TCNTE) is one of the important, medium-to-long-term sources of land supply to meet Hong Kong's housing, economic and social needs.  The TCL Extension will offer direct railway access to the TCNTE in support of the long-term, sustainable growth in population and employment opportunities in that area."  The journey time by railway from TCW Station and TCE Station to Tsim Sha Tsui/Central Stations will be reduced by 12 and 21 minutes respectively.

The Government and the MTR Corporation Limited consulted the Islands District Council on the TCL Extension project earlier and met and communicated with the relevant Rural Committee and different local organisations for their suggestions and concerns about the project. Various publicity activities and briefing sessions were also held to collect public opinions on the project.  The construction works of the proposed TCL Extension will commence soon after the authorisation of the scheme and are expected to be completed by 2029.

Under the Railways Ordinance, members of the public have the right to lodge objections to the railway scheme in relation to the TCL Extension from today until February 8, 2022.  Any person who has a compensatable interest can claim compensation under the provisions of the Ordinance.

The scheme and the relevant plans are available for public inspection at the Central & Western Home Affairs Enquiry Centre, the Islands Home Affairs Enquiry Centre (Tung Chung) and the District Lands Office, Islands, during office hours.

A copy of the scheme and the plans may be purchased from the Railway Development Office of the Highways Department (HyD). For details, please call the HyD at 2762 3976.
