The Hong Kong ICT Awards 2021 (the Awards) presentation ceremony was held this evening (November 29). The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, presented the Award of the Year to the Immigration Department. The winning team outclassed seven other Grand Award category winners with its winning entry Connecting the Globe with Advanced Technology: Next Generation Electronic Passport System and achieved the highest accolade.

Mr Chan said, "The ICT Awards is in its 15th year and received a record-breaking 2 160 applications, with the number of entries in the Student Innovation Category having almost tripled – from some 570 in 2017 to more than 1 600 this year, thanks to the emphasis on STEM education in recent years. Hong Kong is on the cusp of a golden era for I&T development. I encourage our I&T elites and start-ups, to seize the boundless opportunities that will transform Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area in the global economy."

The Hong Kong ICT Awards aims at recognising and promoting outstanding information and communications technology (ICT) inventions and applications, and is an annual signature event in the local ICT industry. In addition to encouraging the winners and recognising their achievements, the Awards also help their products enter into the international markets.

The Awards concluded successfully under the steer of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and the concerted efforts of all Leading Organisers, the Steering Committee and Standards Assurance Sub-committee, the Grand Judging Panel, judges and supporting organisations. The Chairman of the Grand Judging Panel, Professor Wei Shyy, praised the high standard of entries and said, "My fellow judges and I were overwhelmed by the ingenuity with which this year's awardees have leveraged their expertise in transforming market needs and trends into user-friendly technological leaps."
