In response to media enquiries regarding the resignation of Professor Wei Shyy as President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), a spokesman for the Education Bureau today (November 9) gave the following reply:

     The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has taken note of Professor Wei Shyy's resignation to the HKUST Council from his current position as the President of HKUST with effect from October 19, 2022. The Government heartily thanks Professor Shyy for his contributions to both HKUST and Hong Kong's higher education sector over the years. Professor Shyy's contributions in areas such as enhancing HKUST's capacity in scientific research and spearheading the development of HKUST (Guangzhou) under the "unified HKUST, complementary campuses" concept has helped forge a solid foundation for HKUST to go from strength to strength.

     The Government has also taken note that HKUST will initiate its process of a global search for the next President. The recruitment of the President is part of the university's institutional autonomy and is taken care of by the HKUST Council under the authority conferred to it by the HKUST Ordinance (Cap. 1141). The Government has full confidence in the HKUST Council in selecting the most suitable candidate for the post based on the university's long-term interests and development needs.
